The economic benefit from tourism in Yucatán grew 82.4%, going from 7,055 million pesos in 2019 to 12,870 million at the end of 2023, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism Development (Sefotur) during the press conference to present the state results about tourism at the end of the six-year term.

According to the head of the secretariat, Michelle Fridman Hirsch, the arrival of tourists also increased by 34.2%, and the occupancy had a slight increase of 1.4%, indicates “El Universal”.

Other indicators also increased, such as participants in events, hotel tax collection, air passengers, and ecotourism services, the indicator with the highest percentage of growth, which exceeded the increase of 198% during five years of management.

Michelle Fridman explained that the increase in key indicators in measuring tourism in the state was due to factors such as diversification and decentralization of tourism activities.

“At the beginning of the six-year term, we carried out measurements to know the offer. We realized Yucatán was a successful destination, but tourism focused on the capital and Chichén Itzá. “We decided to diversify to have a much greater impact,” he said at a press conference.

The head of Sefotur explained they launched alternatives, including the “365 days and flavors” activity and the addition of Magical Towns to the tourist offer, with places such as Tekax, Motul, Sisal, Maní, Espita, Izamal, and Valladolid, as well as a Magical Neighborhood (the Ermita industrial estate, San Sebastián and Xcalachén).

During the six years, the Mayan Villages tourism product was also added, as well as a cultural, rural, gastronomic, and nature tourism program that contributes to rescuing cultural and natural heritage linked to the global environment through alliances with international organizations.
