Mérida, Yucatán, Sunday, September 22, 2024.- The historic Zoological Park “El Centenario” celebrates its 114th anniversary, consolidating itself as one of the most emblematic spaces in the city.

Since its inauguration in 1910, it has been the scene of countless happy and memorable moments for Merida families, said Mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada.

Within the framework of this celebration, the Municipal President highlighted the importance of the park in the life of the city and its impact on the community, which each year contributes to strengthening healthy coexistence, and social harmony and allows healthy recreation for the people who visit it.

“This park is part of our life. We all have an anecdote, celebration, or walk in this place that gives us identity, and makes us feel good. Taking care of it, maintaining it, and improving it is a way to celebrate it as it deserves.”

The Mayor also expressed her appreciation to the staff who have worked over the years at “El Centenario”, since thanks to their work this green lung of the city is well cared for in all its areas.

“Every worker who passed through this place has all our recognition and affection. More than one hundred years of happy Merida families walking through this park reminds us of the importance of having public spaces, where there are decent conditions for animals.”

In this sense, the Mayor, accompanied by her daughter María Sofia; Jorge Alberto Espinosa Atocha, director of Municipal Public Services, and Felipe Pacheco Sansores, deputy director of General Public Services, presented awards to Camilo Ancona, Mario Correa, José Pech, and José Aké for their 20, 25, 26 and 27 years of service at “El Centenario”, respectively.

He also took the opportunity to announce that in recent days the construction of the roof on the train station was completed so that families can protect themselves from the sun, as well as the change of all the signage and the restoration of the fountain so that children can play in the water.

She also announced that between 2025 and 2026 “El Centenario” will have a new face with its rehabilitation.
