In this month that begins, the port of Progreso will have a greater boost in terms of tourism, since the number of cruise ships will increase considerably compared to September, which only registered five arrivals.

In October, 11 ships will arrive, although the official calendar of the Administration of the National Port System (Asipona) of Progreso indicates that there should be 12.

However, it was found out from official sources that the figure is wrong because, when the shipping company entered the arrival dates considering that the Carnival Breeze would arrive today Tuesday 1, but this will not be possible because there were no tickets sold for this date.

After hearing the news, the service providers of the Progreso boardwalk began to spread the message on social networks that the arrival of the ship had been canceled due to the demonstrations on Tuesday 10, and Thursday 26 September, which coincided with their arrivals, but it was denied that it was due to any protests.

Strategies are planned to attract more tourism to Progreso

For her part, the new head of the tourism department, Aurea Elena Gómez Novelo, assured that tourism is going quite well.

“We are working on proposing strategies that encourage the greatest number of tourists from the cruises to stay in Progreso since many of them buy tours in advance to other destinations in the state,” Aurea Elena Gomez Novelo said.

She said that they continue working on the artisan corridor, which is promoted to attract more tourists so that the artisans can increase their sales.

She also shared that service providers are monitored, since training and inspections will be implemented to regulate them and so that tourists feel safe.

“We must remember that there are not only tourists who come on the cruise but there are quite a few who are local and national who come from Sinaloa, Sonora, Chihuahua, and from all the Central Mexico states. They all want to come to Progreso on any day of the week. Therefore, we must take great care of all tourists,” she stressed.

“Unfair competition” drives tourism away from Progreso

The previous administration began implementing a strategy that consisted of a person from the management going to the dock when visitors arrived to provide them with all the information about what they can do in Progreso and where they can go, but above all, to demystify the port as a destination.

As a form of unfair competition, employees of tours to other destinations “sell” Progreso with a bad image, which causes fear among tourists of possible theft.

Given this situation, Gómez Novelo confirmed that this strategy is still in place, but the guard is not lowered and the search for new strategies to generate rapprochement with visitors continues.
