September recorded the lowest number of visitors to archaeological zones in Quintana Roo, with 98,482 people, becoming the only month below 100,000 visitors in 2024.
According to the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), 55,798 tourists were foreigners and 45,664 were nationals.
Quintana Roo has 12 archaeological zones open to tourism, to which the Ichkabal archaeological zone has been added since last September 8.
This new site, near Bacalar, was inaugurated by then-president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, current president Claudia Sheinbaum, and governor Mara Lezama Espinosa, and is expected to attract more visitors to the south of the state.
Despite its opening, Ichkabal has not yet been officially registered by the INAH, so there is no data on its influx of tourists in its first month of operation.
The INAH also reported that January has been the month with the most visits to archaeological sites, with a total of 188,749 tourists. During that month, 11 of the entity’s archaeological sites were open, except Oxtankah.
This is in the process of archaeological rescue and renovation of its infrastructure as part of the work related to the route of the Mayan Train. Other sites such as El Meco, Muyil, and Xel-Há closed in February for the same reasons.
The archaeological zone of Tulum continues to be the most visited in Quintana Roo. However, sites such as Cobá, Chacchoben, San Gervasio, and El Rey e Xcaret also continue to gain popularity among tourists.
