The governor of Yucatán, Joaquín Díaz Mena, announced that the authorities will investigate the possible negligence of the owners of the four boats that were lost during the passage of Hurricane Milton, putting the lives of the fishermen at risk.
The governor’s statements were issued through a video on his social media, where he detailed the chronology of the events and expressed his solidarity with the affected families.
Díaz Mena reported that one of the vessels, the Peyucsa 12, was located last Wednesday on the high seas by the Navy after weather conditions forced the crew to remain at sea for more than 10 days.
On Thursday morning, he said, a Navy aircraft sighted the boat 116 nautical miles from Progreso, but when the maritime authorities arrived hours later, they only found the overturned boat with no trace of the crew.
The governor also revealed that the crew of the Peyucsa 12, along with the other three lost vessels, did not have the minimum safety certifications.
According to the report from the Secretary of the Navy, these vessels lacked rescue equipment, GPS, communication systems, and emergency devices, which prevented both their location and timely rescue.
“The negligence of those who put fishermen on boats without the minimum conditions to navigate at these depths is unacceptable. They are adapted river boats, which normally must return on the same day of departure, but they were kept at sea for more than 10 days. “This is taking advantage of the need of our fishing brothers,” he condemned.
The president, who is originally from a family of fishermen, showed a firm stance against what he described as acts of ambition on the part of some boat owners, who prioritize economic benefit over the safety of their crews.
“I know closely the anguish of the families who are experiencing this moment, and that is why I have given instructions to continue the search very early with state boats and helicopters,” he added. In addition, the governor reported that the Secretary of the Navy will continue to carry out air and maritime patrols to find the missing vessels and crews, and stressed that the competent federal authorities will investigate and punish those responsible for these “acts of negligence.”
