To revitalize tourism and preserve the cultural heritage of Yucatán, the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) is in the final phase of reopening several archaeological sites and tourism projects in the region.
Anna Luisa Goycoolea Artís, director of INAH in Yucatán, detailed the challenges and progress in opening the archaeological zones of Mayapán and Dzibilchaltún. In addition to the expected inauguration of the Nuevo Uxmal Park, it was scheduled for the end of 2024.
She indicated that the opening of Mayapán, one of the most significant archaeological sites in the region, has been delayed by disagreements between the Ejidatarios over the expropriation of land.
Goycoolea was optimistic about the prompt opening of the archaeological zone of Dzibilchaltún, scheduled for the end of November. This space, which has a new visitor center that is almost complete, seeks to facilitate public access and improve the tourist experience.
On the other hand, the New Uxmal Park will become an important tourist attraction, integrating camping areas and trails for outdoor activities. This project, which covers more than 2,600 hectares, seeks to promote responsible and sustainable tourism, encouraging the appreciation of the biodiversity and cultural heritage of the region.
