INEGI survey places Mérida in first place in security at the national level
Contrary to the situation that prevails in other states of the country, Yucatán remains among the entities with the lowest rates of insecurity, according to data provided by the National Survey of Urban Public Security (ENSU) of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), as of the third quarter of 2024.
ENSU statistics reveal that 58.6% of the population aged 18 and over, residing in 90 cities of interest, considered it unsafe to live in their city. While in Mérida, this rate is only 24.6%, which places it in seventh place nationally.
According to Inegi, the cities where the perception of insecurity was lower were: San Pedro Garza García, with 13.7 percent; Benito Juárez, with 17.5%; Tampico, 20%; Piedras Negras, 20.2%; Puerto Vallarta, 21.3%; Saltillo 21.7 and Mérida, with 24.6.
It is worth mentioning that in the first quarter of this year, the Yucatecan capital was ranked fourth nationally among the safest cities, and in the second quarter, the same seventh place it reached in the third.
Regarding the population of 18 years and older who experienced conflicts or confrontations in Mérida, the percentage decreased from 35.1% in the April-June quarter, to 14.5% in the July-September quarter of 2024.
The main antisocial behaviors or crimes witnessed by the people of Mérida are:
- Alcohol consumption in the streets (43% of those surveyed); robbery or assault (28.4%)
- vandalism (graffiti, damage, and others, 24.2%)
- Drug sales or consumption (22.6%)
- Shooting with firearms (.2%).
Of the people surveyed, 74.8% said they expect that security will improve or remain as good as now, and only 22.2% indicated that it will get worse or remain as bad.
In the Yucatecan capital, the feeling of insecurity at ATMs located on public roads, public transportation, highways and banks is significantly lower than in the rest of the country, which is why it remains a safe and reliable destination for its inhabitants and visitors.
The place where Merida residents feel safest is at home, with 90%. This is followed by shopping malls, 89.4%; their workplace, 88%; their car, 86.6%; the bank, 83.1% and parks or recreational centers, with 83.1%.
Regarding the level of trust that Merida residents have in the authorities.-
85.8% trust the Army; 85.2%, the state police; 82.9%, the National Guard; 74.7%, the Navy; 67.6%, the Municipal Preventive Police, and 58.1%, the Mexican Air Force.
The most important problems of the Yucatecan capital according to the citizens surveyed are:
- Potholes in streets and avenues (86.8%)
- Sewers blocked by accumulation of waste (64%)
- Poor public lighting (61.6%)
- Streets and avenues with traffic jams (54.9%) Saturated hospitals or poor service (53.9%)
- Failures and leaks in the supply of drinking water (50.3%)
- Deficiencies in the public drainage network (41.3%)
- Neglected parks and gardens (40.8%)
- Public transportation service (33.5%)
- Inefficiencies in the cleaning and garbage collection service (29.7%) Crime (robberies, extortions, kidnappings, fraud, etc.), 25.8%.
- By level of government.-
- 71.9% of the inhabitants of Mérida trust the Federal Government.
- 77.1% trust the State Government.
- 68.4% trust the Municipal Government.
