Recently premiered with success in Mérida, the Symphony “From Destiny to the Ideal” by Norwegian composer Jebe Klingeberg, dedicated to the memory of the leader Felipe Carrillo Puerto, will be presented by the Yucatan Symphony Orchestra in the 52nd edition of the International Cervantino Festival.

The so-called “Fiesta del espíritu” (Festival of the Spirit), which has become the country’s main annual cultural and arts gathering for more than half a century and which has its main venue in the city of Guanajuato, invited the Yucatecan symphony group to share with the Cervantine public the musical tribute to the Yucatecan hero (1874-1924).

The artistic director of the group, José Areán, reported on this upcoming participation of the orchestra on October 26 in the festival as part of the 2024 Year of Felipe Carrillo Puerto instituted by the Mexican government one hundred years after his death and by invitation of the Federal Ministry of Culture and the FIC.

Maestro Areán presented the aforementioned symphony by Jebe Klingeberg (1868-1937), who lived in Yucatán, where he met and dedicated his work to the Yucatecan leader, as a national premiere with the OSY on October 18 and 20, with great acceptance from the public and critics gathered at the Palacio de Música.

He explained that, by chance, the author returned to his country of origin and managed to gather musicians to present his compositions, among them the symphony dedicated to his friend Carrillo Puerto, which was premiered by the Selskap Philharmonic conducted by Olav Kieland on January 21, 1932, at the Oslo University Auditorium.

He recalled that since January of that year he began negotiations with the Norwegian Embassy in Mexico to obtain Jebe Klingeberg’s score, which was located and, after prior authorizations, a copy of the original was sent, which was reviewed for transcription, reading, and rehearsals with the orchestra.

The Symphony in A Minor “The Path of Destiny towards the Ideal” consists of four movements, Epic: Introduction; By day: Minuet; By night: Adagio, and March, with an approximate duration of 35 minutes and, according to its author, in its creation “it does not show the fallen politician but the man, the idealist.”

After the successful presentation at the Palace of Music in Merida, now it will be the distinguished Juarez Theater in Guanajuato where this composition will be presented to the Cervantine public, as part of an attractive program that will be broadcast on Channel 22 television and social networks.

The orchestra will open the program with the Dance of the Aluxes by the Yucatecan Gustavo Río Escalante (1880-1963), an allegorical composition from 1943 for a ballet choreography, based on the idea that the aluxes in Mayan mythology are elves or goblins who live in the countryside.

No less important is the presentation as a special guest in this program of the French cellist Marie Ythier, who will perform as a soloist the three movements of the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra Number 1 in C major by Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809).

The concert artist has performed as a soloist under the baton of renowned conductors such as Pierre Boulez, T. Zehetmair, R. Fores Veses, J. Arean, C. Power, and Peter Csaba and has premiered more than 20 works for solo cello dedicated to her talent and two concerts for that instrument.

José Areán reported that the OSY will also offer a concert on October 25 at the Bicentennial Theater in the city of León, Guanajuato, in which it will present, in addition to the aforementioned works by Río Escalante and Haydn, the New World Symphony by the Czech composer Antonin Dvorak.
