About 2 thousand people from 40 schools in Yucatán participated in the activity of the Yucatán Scientific Research Center (CICY) called “Open House”, which is a scheme designed so that children and youth of school age can get closer to the scientific work that develops this center with an accessible language supported by recreational activities.

When officially opening the event, the director of the CICY, Mayra Rubí Segura Campos, recalled that scientific work has a direct impact on the daily life of every person, so the intention of holding an event of this nature is to create a communicative link between the general public and the scientific community of the state.

Open House is an emblematic event of this research center for scientific dissemination and for this edition, 83 activities were carried out aimed at children and adolescents from primary to high school, explained the head of Social Communication at the CICY, Julio Domínguez Orta.

He explained that there were just over 40 schools that participated, both from the state and from guest states such as Coahuila and Puebla.

This is the 15th edition of Open House which is held within the framework of the 45th anniversary of the founding of the CICY. Domínguez Orta indicated that on this occasion they prepared to receive about 2 thousand visitors, so to make it different from previous years’ editions, an agroecological market area was prepared, in order to promote healthy eating, but also a children’s area with 10 activities focused on primary school students.

The units of the CICY DE natural resources, material resources, integrative biology, biotechnology, renewable energies, and polymeric materials participated in this scientific dissemination day.

Attendees had access to talks, demonstrations, and guided tours, as well as interactive activities on various topics such as plant improvement, knowledge of DNA, and aquifer conservation, among others, with a friendlier approach. He indicated that it was also used to have a space to sell plants from the CICY’s botanical garden, as well as habanero chili seeds, pineapple plants, and other elements from the biofactory such as henequen, belonging to the agave family.
