Encouraging December outlook for hoteliers in Quintana Roo

The outlook for hoteliers in the Riviera Maya is encouraging. According to Toni Chaves, president of the Riviera Maya Hotel Association, hotel reservations for November are already in 80% occupancy and are expected to rise to 90% in December.

This increase is considered positive after a summer season that did not fully meet hoteliers’ expectations.

Toni Cháves explained that September and October are traditionally hard months for the tourism sector due to the low influx of travelers, which was exacerbated this year by the elections in the United States.

He added that hoteliers made adjustments to operating expenses. However, the outlook has begun to improve with a rebound in reservations that anticipates a competitive end to the year.

The deterioration of Federal Highway 307 is one of the pending issues for hoteliers in the Riviera Maya since it is a crucial route for tourists who rent cars to tour the Mexican Caribbean.

The businessman mentioned that this situation has been discussed with Governor Mara Lezama and the State Secretary of Tourism since it represents a risk for visitors.

The president of the Hotel Association recalled that, initially, the Mayan Train was planned to pass through this road, but the plan was readjusted.

He also expressed that now, the challenge is to manage the resources necessary at the federal level to repair the road.

This task will be carried out with the support of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena). Although the funds have already been allocated, the work will be carried out once the Mayan Train works are completed.

They will focus on the southern part of the state, where trucks and dump trucks continue to contribute to the deterioration of the road.

According to the president of the AHRM, repairs to Highway 307 are expected to begin in November, starting in Cancún and moving south.

The expectation is that by the time the work reaches that area, the Mayan Train works will be completed or in their final phase, which will allow the necessary improvements to be carried out in this vital tourist road.
