Piglets mysteriously disappear at “Pig Beach” in Progreso

Pig Beach lasted just over three years, since the eight resident piglets of that site, the main attraction of that place, have been absent since Saturday, October 5, when the tourist site closed due to the threat of Hurricane Milton.

More than a month after Milton, Pig Beach, one of the destinations that became popular for its peculiar attraction of little pigs on the beach, remains closed due to the damage caused by the hurricane.

The place is guarded by the municipal police, and the entrance is cordoned off with yellow tape to prevent onlookers.

Pig Beach, located in front of the facilities of the Thirteenth Naval Zone and between the Isstey Vacation Center spa and the official house of the Harbor Master’s Office, gained popularity as a family destination for different activities in the port.

The current situation contrasts with the vibrant activity that characterizes this place. It went from being a busy place full of laughter to being solitary and with restricted access.

Pig Beach emerged in August 2021. On August 6 of that year, the Ecological Police, under the command of Commander Obdulio Delajney Mena Sánchez, reported that a month before they rescued and adopted eight little pigs.

Neighbors suggested opening a Pig Beach similar to the famous beach in the Bahamas, and thus this attraction was born in the previous administration as an educational farm.

At the time it was reported that Pig Beach emerged as an initiative of the municipal administration to transform a neglected and littered area into a clean and attractive beach.

The place was conceived to give a home to eight rescued piglets, which attracted families, especially children, who were looking for an original place to interact with these animals on the beach.

Pig Beach not only revitalized the area by clearing tons of waste but also boosted the local economy by attracting both domestic and international tourists.

In this sense, the initiative promoted environmental education, with the Ecological Police in charge of caring for and monitoring both the piglets and the beach area, transforming Pig Beach into an example of ecologically responsible tourism.
