This year, more than 500 labels of national wines and spirits will be tasted, to be rated by a jury of experts from Mexico and countries in Europe, North America, Asia, and Latin America.

The venue for this edition is San Luis Potosí from November 20 to 22. In 2023, it was held in Mérida and it was the first time that a non-producing state hosted this prestigious competition.

Alberto Nacif, sommelier and businessman from Yucatan, is part of the experts who, based on their recognized experience and international capacity as tasters, will be key in awarding medals to the best wines and spirits in the country at the Brussels World Competition Selection Mexico 2024.

For this purpose, they will blind-taste more than 500 labels to recognize the excellence of the drinks and integrate a quality guide that promotes the country’s wine heritage. This competition will take place from November 20 to 22 in San Luis Potosí.

Previously, representatives from the country participated in its world version in China last September, where Mexico won 58 medals (18 gold and 40 silver).

Nacif, director of Grupo Comitiva, recalled that in 2023, despite the fact that Yucatan is not a producing state, the organizers selected the entity for its history, natural and architectural beauty; as well as the quality of its gastronomic offering and hospitality, which are essential elements for promoting the culture of wine and spirits.

According to data from the Vitivinicultural Council presented in its report on Wine Consumption Trends in Mexico and the World 2024, Yucatán is part of a national wine consumption market of 1.3 liters per capita.

“My participation as a representative of the state allows us to position the region in an area of high specialization. Yucatán has a relevant culinary tradition and an unparalleled cultural wealth, but we are also experiencing a boom in interest in enology and mixology. Participating in the Brussels World Competition allows me to be an active voice that connects this cultural wealth with the trends of this sector, helping the entity to be recognized not only as a tourist destination but also as a place of gastronomic and beverage excellence,” he added.

Alberto also said that after his experience as a judge in national and international meetings, he organizes events, contests, and workshops in Merida.

Likewise, as founder of the Mexican Academy of Sommeliers in the Peninsula, he promotes this knowledge in the selection of labels and in the way of presenting each drink to consumers, from a deep and respectful knowledge of its origin and elaboration.

Experts from Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany, Honduras, the United States, Spain, and the United Kingdom were invited to the judging panel this year.
