President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that on Tuesday, November 26th, she will send a letter to the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, in which she will explain the importance of strengthening the commercial relationship between Mexico, the United States, and Canada.
At the National Palace, the head of the federal Executive pointed out that of course Mexico has a commercial relationship with China, but it favors the nations with which it has free trade agreements.
“Today I am going to send a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, including among many other data, Canadian imports of electric vehicles of Chinese origin reached 1.6 billion dollars showing exponential growth. In the case of Mexico, it is much lower, while foreign direct investment from 2006 to 2024 from the United States and Canada reached 33,357 million US dollars in the automotive sector, in Mexico that of China is only 590 million USD. Issues that are not known as part of our Free Trade Agreement,” Sheinbaum said.
At a press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum recalled that former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issued decrees to impose import tariffs of up to 25% to support the domestic market and strengthen the free trade agreements of which Mexico is a part, also for steel and aluminum from China, as well as from other countries that do not have a trade agreement.
“Mexico has been working in a very important way to strengthen the commercial relationship not only with North America but with other countries as well,” the president said.
