Air tourism on the island of Cozumel is closing the year with positive figures, reporting a 10% increase in the number of passengers during the period from January to October 2024, compared to the same period in 2023.

According to Pablo Aguilar Torres, representative of the Quintana Roo Tourism Promotion Council (CPTQ), 599,589 passengers have been registered this year compared to 541,881 last year.

The holding of important sporting events such as the Ironman and the GFNY Cozumel cycling race has been a determining factor in this growth.

These events attracted more than 10,000 people over two weekends, significantly increasing the number of visitors to the island.

It is still expected that November will add more passengers to these figures, consolidating the end of the year with a positive outlook.

Hotel occupancy also shows a significant rebound, currently reaching 68% with expectations of growing during the Christmas season, especially during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

This increase is the result of the reactivation of air frequencies from the United States and Canada, which strengthened overnight tourism on the island.

Although the amounts have not been specified, Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur) has announced the expansion of the waiting room for national and international flights, which predicts an increase in air operations for the coming years.

With the current momentum, Cozumel is expected to conclude 2024 with historic figures in air tourism.

The combination of international events, reactivation of air routes, and improvements in airport infrastructure promises to strengthen the island’s position as a reference destination in the Caribbean.
