If the threats of mass deportations by the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, are carried out, thousands of Yucatecans who work in the neighboring country to the north would be at risk of being repatriated.
Last December, a report from the Migration Policy Unit of the Ministry of the Interior (Segob) reported 411 Yucatecans deported from January to November 2024.
The Institute for the Development of Mayan Culture (Indemaya) warned that 100,000 Yucatecans who are in the United States illegally are at risk of being deported if Donald Trump’s threats of mass deportations are carried out.
The agency indicated that about 250 thousand Yucatecans work in the United States, mainly in California, Oregon, Texas, New Mexico and Nebraska.
The Indemaya pointed out that Yucatecan migrants contribute millionaire resources to the state, a figure that amounts to 400 million dollars annually. These resources are distributed in 78 municipalities, mainly in Mérida and towns in the center, south, and east of the state, for the benefit of about 90 thousand families. For its part, the Bank of Mexico highlighted a significant increase in resources sent from the United States to Yucatán, which shows an upward trend since the pandemic.
