The president of Poder Migrante Mexicano A.C., Miguel Ángel Martínez Contreras, expressed that, given the mass deportation measures that the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, intends to implement, the deportation of approximately 10 to 15 thousand Yucatecans is expected.
“This is the approximate number that we are calculating, we all want it to be minimal, but as we are seeing the situation, the vulnerable groups are those who are in the fields, plowing and harvesting,” said Miguel Ángel Martínez.
Yucatán is one of the states in southeastern Mexico with the highest number of people in migrant status in the United States, said Miguel Ángel.
Figures offered by the association Poder Migrante Mexicano establish that in 2024, Yucatán received 8.5 billion pesos in remittances. The deportation of 15 thousand Yucatecans would affect the total number of these remittances for the state by 30 percent.
“We have to close ranks with the state government so that both the private sector and the government do something for these migrants.”
About 250 thousand Yucatecans are living in the United States, from towns such as Tunkás, Mérida, Oxkutzcab, Tekax, Peto, and Cenotillo, among others.
“In Yucatán, it is necessary to create a Migrant Secretariat to have a reliable and real registry of the people who leave their state and live on the other side of the border,” Miguel Angel Martinez concluded.
