The celebrations will include symbolic acts, open classes, cake-cutting and exhibitions.
The “General Salvador Alvarado” stadium, known as the Cathedral of Yucatecan Sport, will turn 86 years old this Saturday, February 1st and a celebration will be held worthy of this sports venue that was the first to be founded in the Peninsula, cradle of great athletes and with a history that transcends since it opened its doors in 1939, so it will have a tribute worthy of what it represents for athletes, which will be coordinated by the Sports Institute of Yucatan (Idey) with the support of the friends of the stadium and users.
Armin Lizama Cordova, director of Idey accompanied by Johansen Macías Medina, representative of the Civil Association “Sports Actions of the Friends of the Stadium”; Leonel Macías Sánchez, director of sports promotion and main promoter of the celebrations and Gisele Ordaz Tamayo, administrator of this sports unit, made the official presentation of the celebrations that, as every year, will begin at 4:30 a.m. with the lighting of the new fire in the Main Plaza of Mérida and will be carried on a torch by the morning runners until reaching the Yucatán colony grounds to light the brazier at 5:00 a.m. and begin the celebrations.
After the lighting, the laps will begin on the building’s tartan track and also the “Augusto Salías Ahuja” pool, this will be done with the athletes who normally train in that place, to then give way to a taebo and Latin rhythms class at 7:00 a.m., in addition to the traditional cutting of the anniversary cake and exhibitions of athletics, soccer, paddle tennis, basketball, volleyball, artistic swimming, tennis, softball and an amateur boxing match starting at 8:00 a.m. with the young prospects of the gymnasium of the place.
Exhibitions of all sports were also scheduled, and medals of civic merit will be awarded to Ramón Pérez Arzápalo, Abigail Cabrera Martínez, Herbert Pérez Villanueva, and Bidget Pedraza Koyoc.
Nearly 4 thousand users a day confirm the “Salvador Alvarado” stadium as an emblematic facility in Yucatan, which has more than 12 sports disciplines that are practiced, in addition to additional classes of salsa, tabeo, jumping, Latin rhythms, and CrossFit that are offered at the site throughout the week.
