The Merida City Council will promote awareness campaigns on the importance of proper waste management, generating greater citizen awareness about the care of the environment that seeks to improve air quality, maintain an ecological balance, and reduce the environmental impact of the city’s solid waste.
In this context, in the ordinary session held this Thursday, the Merida City Council granted the General Coordination of Orderly Development and Management of the City powers and obligations in matters of management and handling of solid waste in the municipality.
“We have decided to make this change to highlight this figure that will join forces with various programs and actions for the cleanliness of the city and what we seek is to give life importance to the proper management of solid waste,” said the Mayor.
“Because we know the problem and we are addressing it, that is why we seek with the same budget to have a more consolidated team that only addresses the issue of solid waste,” added the first mayor.
Among the management and actions that will be carried out through this organizational structure of coordination is the collection, transportation, treatment, and final disposal of solid waste efficiently and safely.
Likewise, coordinate with municipal, state, and federal agencies to ensure the comprehensive management of waste; promote policies and regulations to reduce waste generation and encourage reuse and recycling; as well as promote the establishment and operation of the monitoring, supervision, control, and evaluation system of the collection service.
Also design and implement programs to educate citizens about the importance of proper waste management and environmental protection, among others.
“The municipality of Mérida is committed to working together with citizens to achieve a cleaner and healthier environment for all. I thank the entire council for its commitment to this city to address various collection problems, garbage in streets where it should not exist,” said Cecilia Patrón.
“We will need everyone to join forces to make Mérida shine with cleanliness, to make Mérida the city we are so proud of, and to return to our roots of being the cleanest city in Mexico,” added the mayor.
This authorization for readjustment in municipal governance will aim to guarantee the comprehensive and sustainable management of urban solid waste, coordinating more efficiently the areas involved in the municipal sphere in the matter and contributing to improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of the municipality.
