The municipality of Umán celebrated International Mother Language Day on Thursday, February 21st, in a festive and traditional atmosphere.
The region’s Telebachilleratos Comunitarios and municipal police stations enthusiastically participated. The day was marked by artistic and cultural expressions that highlighted the richness of the Yucatecan people.
During the event, students from the Telebachilleratos Comunitarios of Bolón, San Antonio Chum, Kuchel, Oxcum, Oxholón, Dzibikak, Nohuayún, Sisal, San Antonio Tzacalá, Yaxcopoil, Texán de Palomeque, San Antonio Tedzidz, Samahil, Poxilá, Tebec, Xtepén and Ticimul presented jarana numbers, a representation of a Mayan wedding, charangas, narration of Mayan legends and the traditional burning of the bull, strengthening the pride and cultural identity of the region.
The Municipal President of Umán, Mtra. Kenia Walldina Sauri Maradiaga led the ceremony and highlighted the importance of preserving the Mayan language. “Umán is a municipality with deep Mayan roots, and this celebration reaffirms our commitment to promote its teaching and conservation in each police station,” she said.
Also present at the event were the Municipal Secretary, Dr. Rocío del Socorro Chacón Yam; the Head of Educational Quality, Mtra. Fátima Quintal; and Councilman Víctor Andrés Paredes González, who highlighted the importance of promoting the use of Mayan in everyday life.
The Community Telebachilleratos played a fundamental role in carrying out this activity, encouraging youth to get involved in preserving their mother tongue through cultural expressions.
With events like this, the Umán City Council 2024-2027 reaffirms its commitment to education, culture, and the strengthening of the Yucatecan identity, promoting initiatives that guarantee the permanence of the Mayan language for future generations.
