Mérida once again stood out as one of the safest cities in the country, thanks to indicators that demonstrate a perception of tranquility that contrasts with those of other cities, in parameters such as confidence when carrying out banking transactions within branches or ATMs, traveling by public transport or on local roads.

In addition, according to the National Public Security Survey (ENSU) for the end of 2024, in the Yucatecan capital, only one percent of citizens reported feeling unsafe in the vicinity of their home, an extraordinarily low figure for the level of unrest that permeates other urban areas of the country.

According to the ENSU, applied by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), which evaluates various aspects, the feeling of security when carrying out banking operations is more than 78 percent, since only 31.4 percent of the population feels unsafe when withdrawing money from an ATM on public roads, a level that is not observed in other places in Mexico for a similar situation.

The confidence of Yucatecans increases when going directly to a bank branch, where the percentage of insecurity drops to 15.1 percent, that is, more than 84 percent of citizens go without fear to carry out their money transactions in financial companies; in this area, the Yucatecan capital is in fourth position in the ranking of capitals where people feel safer when withdrawing money.

In contrast, at the national level, the survey indicates that, in December 2024, 75.5 percent of women said they felt insecure at ATMs located on public roads and 67.7 percent on public transportation. Of men, the percentages are 61.5 percent at ATMs and 56.9 percent on public transportation.

Public transportation is another of the areas analyzed by the survey. In Mérida, only 23.4 percent of residents aged 18 and over said they felt some level of insecurity when using this means of transport, a figure that remains low compared to other cities in the country.

Regarding road trips, the perception of risk is also low. Only 24.4 percent of Merida residents said they felt unsafe when traveling on the road, a considerably lower percentage compared to cities such as Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, where 87.7 percent of the population expressed fear of traveling on the roads.

Despite the good results in the perception of security, the ENSU also reflects certain concerns among citizens about the future of crime. 30.4 percent of Yucatecans believe that the security situation could worsen or remain the same in the coming months. However, Mérida continues to stand out for its tranquility. Only 1 percent of the population reported feeling unsafe due to the presence or having witnessed gunshots in the vicinity of their home, one of the lowest figures recorded nationwide.
