A mistake that could have ended in tragedy. A man started a fire at a gas station in the Manuel Crescencio Rejón neighborhood in Merida after answering a call while filling two containers with gasoline.
The incident occurred when the driver was filling containers of approximately 500 liters each. When he answered his phone after filling the first one, a static electricity discharge was generated that ignited the fuel.
The flames spread immediately, reaching the body of his truck. Fortunately, employees at the station reacted quickly and put out the fire with fire extinguishers before an explosion broke out.
Minutes later, fire trucks from the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) arrived at the scene to completely extinguish the fire and prevent further damage.
The driver was repremended and warned by the authorities and urged to take extreme precautions, reminding him that using a cell phone at gas stations is a dangerous practice that can have fatal consequences.
