On Tuesday February 16th, around 6 p.m., two boats caught fire at the Yucalpetén Boat Harbour in the municipality of Progreso, Yucatán; other boats were engulfed when the fire spread, but fortunatelly firefighters were able to control the situation.
According to local authorities, the fire started while repair work was being carried out in some of the ships harbored in this port of shelter.
It was reported that the ships that were totally destroyed by the fire were a fishing boat, ‘Don Chelo II,’ and a fiberglass catamaran. A catamaran is a type of vessel that features two hulls connected by a platform or frame, and may be propelled by sail and / or motor.
According to data collected at the scene, the fire would have spread quickly due to some of the substances and materials used to repair the fiberglass on boats.
Municipal, state and federal authorities worked in coordination to control and extinguish the fire in the port of Yucalpetén.
