Rome, the “Eternal City”, will be connected again with Mexico City through a direct flight; this was announced by President Enrique Peña Nieto in a message to media during the first state visit of President of the Council of Ministers of the Italian Republic, Matteo Renzi.

The Italian airline, Alitalia, will be offering the service starting on June 16 and will have three weekly frequencies; the connection will be made with a Boeing 777 with capacity for 293 passengers.

“We are working to make this flight permanent, improving air connectivity between the two countries, and eventually we will encourage tourism, trade and business relations between the private sectors of both countries, carrying out a greater and more robust economic relationship”, said Peña Nieto in his speech. He added that the renewal of this flight is essential to promote bilateral investment, since just last year trade between the two nations was 6.7 billion pesos ($376 million USD).

Besides being the third largest trading partner of Mexico in the European Union, Italy is expected to support the upgrade and trade cooperation agreement that Mexico holds with the European bloc since 2000.

The Italian president, Matthew Renzi, arrived in the country accompanied by a group of businessmen interested in investing mainly in the energy sector in Mexico, a field that could attract investments of at least two billion dollars at the end of this year and during 2017.

Other industries that were identified as investment opportunities for Italian companies were the automotive, the food, fashion and footwear sectors.
