CANCUN, Q. Roo — In Cancun 104,107 foreigners currently reside, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), a figure that represents 14% of the city’s residents.
The current population of Benito Juárez, the municipality of which Cancun is part, is 743,626 persons.
The population of the state of Quintana Roo is 1,501,562, and the foreigners visiting or intending to live here are mainly originating from Cuba, Venezuela, Peru, Colombia and the United States.
“Occasionally I miss my homeland, but I’ve been living here so much, I feel that I’m Mexican,” said Michel Rojas Valdivia, who was born and raised in Venezuela, but has lived in Mexico for over 10 years. Visiting Cancun six years ago, he mentioned that his purpose was not to stay and live here, he was just vacationing, but he fell in love with the city.
After finding work in the tourism sector and acquiring a stable residence to live, he brought his family to live here. Now he wants to obtain Mexican nationality.
“Occasionally I miss my land, but I’ve been living here so much, I feel that I’m Mexican,” he said.
Based on data from the statistics of the Migration Policy Unit, in Mexico the influx of foreigners during January and March this year was 9,153,397, of which, through Quintana Roo entered 4,031,422 people.
