Mayor Mauricio Vila Dosal announced the construction of three new projects that will improve urban mobility in southern and northern Merida.

“The first involves the revitalization of calle 50 sur, an integral project for the capital, as it will transform the area with the resurfacing of 1.6 kilometers of the two roadways of this avenue, it also includes the construction of a bicycle path, green areas, installation of street furniture and new pedestrian areas, among other improvements”, said the head of City Hall.

“This construction work aims to favor mobility for pedestrians and cyclists in an area that has had a significant growth of traffic flow in last two years.” said mayor Vila Dosal.

He said that this is a unique project because it would be the first with a comprehensive improvement intervention in a space where hundreds of families live and work. In addition, he said, the first bike path with that extension will be built within the urban area of southern Merida.

The mayor reported that prior to the project, social work was done by different governement agencies such as Public Works, Social and Urban Development and Implan, these institutions held several meetings with residents, members of civic organizations and groups of cyclists to explain the benefits for the Meridanos living in this sector.

“This project”, Vila Dosal continued, “has the consensus of the Municipal Council of Urban Development and features the redistribution of space in favor of pedestrians and non-motorized mobility, the improvement of connectivity so people can have an easier and faster access to workplaces, schools, markets and hospitals in the area, with high quality, efficient and safe infrastructure along the way”.

With this work, the road will increase from six to nine meters wide and additionally a bicycle lane of 2.5 meters wide will be built, the lane will benefit hundreds of people who use bicycles as means of transportation on a regular basis and to go to work everyday.

Both the expansion and the bike path will be about 1.8 kilometers long. This work will start in three months and require an investment of 5 million pesos ($270,000 USD).

SAN RAMON NORTE

The third project,  consists in the construction of new roads for the San Ramon Norte neighborhood, near the area where the CFE currently carries out construction works on Avenida Andrés García Lavin, by the City Center Shopping area.

“The City Council will finish these necessary works as soon as possible,  in response to the demand of local residents and business owners who have expressed that the works carried out in this sector have affected them in different ways;” said the mayor.
