For Mexicans, Cuba can be a great challenge and opportunity, and the island can be either an extraordinary competitor or a formidable partner, Enrique de la Madrid Cordero, Secretary of Tourism of Mexico, said Tuesday June 7 in Merida.

Manuel Marrero Cruz, Minister of Tourism of Cuba, said that his country wants to be a great complement, not a competitor of Mexico, in tourism projects, besides offering Mexicans investment opportunities.

Both officials are leading the First Forum of Mexico-Cuba Tourism Businesses that began Tuesday and concludes Wednesday afternoon at the Convention Center Siglo XXI in Merida.

With the presence of Cuban and Mexican businessmen, as well as officials from both countries, Yucatan Governor Rolando Zapata Bello welcomed and stressed that with this meeting Yucatan became the main link of the relaunch of bilateral relations between Mexico and Cuba .

At this conference, meetings and talks between businessmen from both countries are being conducted to arrange business deals.

De la Madrid Cordero highlighted three important points to take advantage of this event:

First try to realize the project of Multi-Destination Tourism with Cuba-Mexico packages, taking advantage of the direct flights now coming from China and Europe to the island, and promoting the Caribbean.

As a second point the federal official cited that businessmen from Mexico, Yucatan and especially Merida, must seize the moment to become the leading providers of Cuba.

As a third point, he said that the island should be the destination for Mexican investments, take advantage of this great opportunity “boom” that is Cuba today.

“The ultimate purpose is to allow more Mexican investment in Cuba, … taking advantage especially of so rapid a startup of Cuba”, de la Madrid Cordero said.

For his part, Manuel Marrero Cruz, Minister of Tourism of Cuba, said the Revolution never turns its back on those who in difficult times offered aid and support.

The tourism minister added that tourism is the locomotive of the economy of his country, and is where Mexicans are invited to invest.

As part of the forum the minister presented the current situation and future plans of tourism in Cuba, including investments from other countries such as the United States already, and where only are missing Mexicans, he said.
