A travel warning has been issued to UK holidaymakers heading to Cancun and the Riviera Maya after dozens of tourists were reportedly struck with food poisoning.
The outbreak involves several luxury hotel complexes popular with British holidaymakers. Health bosses say the illness is likely linked to food supplied to hotels throughout the resort area.
The same resort suffered a similar outbreak last year where UK tourists were taken ill by the same bug.
Guests are believed to have eaten contaminated food in their hotels and later fell ill with severe stomach cramps and diarrhoea.
A number of hotels are believed to be affected by the outbreak, including the Thomson-run four star Catalonia Riviera Maya Resort and Spa and the Hotel Royalton Riviera Cancun.
The agency said in statement posted on their website: ‘Cases of infection with the diarrhoea causing parasite cyclospora have continued to be reported by UK holidaymakers returning from Mexico.
‘The majority of cases have stayed in all-inclusive resorts in the Riviera Maya area.’
