The prices of generic and patent drugs have increased in Mexico, mainly due to the depreciation of the peso against the US dollar.
During the fifth National Generic Drug Fair, held in the nation’s capital, representatives of the drug sector stated that by the end of the year, the price of imported patent medicines would increase around 50 percent.

Generic drugs are also more expensive, with increased prices of 20 percent.

The president of the National Union of Pharmacy Entrepreneurs, Juvenal Becerra said that the prices of domestic generic drugs would rise by an estimated 15 percent.

Becerra also explained that although the rise in the dollar affects all medicines imported, those most impacted are drugs which cure chronic degenerative diseases such as hypertension, lipids and diabetes, as well as products for gastrointestinal diseases.

He called for the support of the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risk to reduce the impact these price increases have on consumers.
