Prior to the arrival of springbreakers to the state of Quintana Roo, actions need to be taken to counteract erosion in the main recreational areas of the Riviera Maya. This is how the beaches of five municipalities, which are seriously affected by excessive erosion, will be subjected to preventive actions.

“The state Secretariat of Ecology and Environment (SEMA) is looking for strategies to recover, restore and create prevention measures to stop the loss of public beaches. For this reason, we will hold meetings with local authorities, hotel associations, trusts and sand dunes and reef restoration experts from the states of Yucatan and Veracruz”, said Alfredo Arellano Guillermo, head of SEMA.

Cozumel, Solidaridad, Tulum, Puerto Morelos and Benito Juárez are the most vulnerable municipalities to erosion and the loss of sand dunes. So far 800 million pesos have been allocated from 2006 to 2015, according to business and hotel sectors, to try to keep the sand areas stable.

Arellano Guillermo added that for now they are carrying out revisions with the Secretariat of Infrastructure and Transport (Sintra), to create a successful strategy to save this area, since it requires billions of pesos of investment in various actions that start with restoring the reefs and also the beach vegetation in order to increase the accumulation of sand in the future, and to combat erosion. According to the head of SEMA, an adequate management with technical and scientific advice is absolutely necessary.

Alfredo Arellano Guillermo stated that they are verifying the beach recovery records left by the previous administration, to determine how they can reprogram the process of prevention for the loss and damage of these vital natural resources.

He said that the proposal is to recover the beaches of the municipalities of Cozumel, Solidaridad, Tulum, Puerto Morelos and Benito Júarez; along with some of the most affected areas along the Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, the shores near the Moon Palace and some other beaches in Cancun.

“The meetings between the groups involved in this preventive activity need to start asap” Arellano Guillermo concluded.
