Ruben Navarrette Jr., a member of the USA TODAY Board of Contributors, columnist with The Washington Post Writers Group and The Daily Beast, shares with us his opinion on Trump´s immigration policies and “The Wall”.
Is Mexico going to pay for President Trump’s “big beautiful wall” on the U.S.-Mexico border?
No way, Jose.
Not only have Mexican officials been crystal clear that they’re not going to foot the bill for the wall, they have even gone so far as to challenge the very idea that the United States has the right to build the structure in the first place.
After all, the United States’ southern border is Mexico’s northern border. So Mexico arguably has as much claim on that piece of real estate as its neighbor does.
Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray recently told reporters that his country would not roll over and accept Trump’s immigration agenda.
“I want to say clearly and emphatically that the government of Mexico and the Mexican people do not have to accept provisions that one government unilaterally wants to impose on the other,” Videgaray said. “We also have control of our borders and we will exercise it fully.”
This is more evidence that Trump’s much-ballyhooed pet project on the border is crumbling before it even gets built.
The politics fueling it. The justification for it. The plans for how to pay for it. It’s all tumbling down.
Even Trump seems to be scaling down what he bragged throughout the campaign would be a “big, beautiful wall.”
In his recent speech to Congress, the president promised to “restore integrity and the rule of law” to our southern border.
“For that reason, we will soon begin the construction of a great wall along our southern border,” he said. “It will be started ahead of schedule and, when finished, it will be a very effective weapon against drugs and crime.”
