COZUMEL — According to Riviera Maya News, at the beginning of May, Aromexico flights to and from Cozumel will no longer be offered.

The announcement comes after failed meetings between the town’s mayor and airline directors. It’s been reported that mayor Perla Cecilia Tun Pech has not expressed interest in attending set meetings with Aeromexico officials to renew their agreement. Reports also say that she has not promoted the island at national levels, resulting in a drop in passengers, another factor that has led to the cancellation of the connection.
Cozumel International Airport reports that the last Aeromexico flight to the island will be Sunday, April 30.
Regular flights to the island began in October of 2015 with 50-passenger planes which, within a few months, had increased to a 150-passenger A320 Airbus. There is speculation that one Saturday flight per week may remain via Mexico City stop-over as well as an Atlanta flight that would land in Cozumel before heading to its final destination of Mexico City. If airlines approve these flights, they would only be offered during the months of June, July and August.
When booking on Aeromexico, flights to the island from May 1 forward have already been removed as an option.
