‘Tunich’ crafts festival 2017 set for July 28 to Aug. 6 in Dzityá

From July 28 to August 6, the city of Mérida has prepared a program with more than 60 cultural, artistic, gastronomic and artisan events for the Tunich Fair 2017 in Dzityá. This festival aims to spread the cultural, culinary and craft wealth of Mérida, as well as generating an economic impact to benefit local artisans.

Artisan stone carving workers from various parts of Mexico will participate in the Tunich Fair; including 30 people from places such as Michoacán, Puebla, Veracruz, Querétaro and Guanajuato. The event’s program is designed for the public’s entertainment, as it will offer a wide variety of both artisan and traditional products made of wood, stone, liana, among others. Likewise, typical clothing, products made with shell and regional food will be sold.

According to municipal authorities, this is the 16th edition of the Tunich Fair (Mayan word meaning handmade), and will include musical shows, comedians, children’s activities, a gastronomic show, craftsales and contests for artisans. There will be 124 local crafters from all around Mérida; they will all sell their regional and traditional products, such as hammocks, sweets, pottery, jewelry, liqueurs, yucatec syrups and textiles, among others.

Carolina Cárdenas Sosa, director of Department of Economic Development and Tourism of Mérida, stated that free transportation will be provided for anyone who cannot afford to go by car. They will all depart from Plaza Grande to Dzityá. The schedules are: Monday to Saturday, from 5 pm to 11 pm, and on Sundays, from 10 am to 11 pm; there will be a bus every 15 minutes. The fair will count with 7 parking areas with a capacity for 240 cars. Likewise, new sanitary services will be offered.
