RIVIERA MAYA — After the activation of the yellow alert due to Tropical Storm “Franklin” approaching the coast of Quintana Roo, hurricane shelters are being made available to the population.

Reynaldo Vargas Canché, director of Fire Brigade, announced that those available in Chetumal are: CBTA 11, Guadalupe Victoria Elementary, Fernando Figueroa Elementary, Mariano Azuela Elementary, Centennial Primary of the Revolution, Pascual Coral Heredia School, Technical High School Number 2, and Francisco I. Madero School.

While the port captain of Playa del Carmen reports that the port is closed to navigation until further notice, the association of nautical operators of the Riviera Maya emphasizes that they will lose income after more than 40 days of positive activity in summer vacations.

In Cozumel, the Port Captaincy announced the closure to smaller boats after 12 pm; Apiqroo reported that one of the two cruises scheduled for today has already canceled.

Also were closed several ports in southern Quintana Roo, as the storm is expected to touch land somewhere between Chetumal and Punta Allen, in the municipality of Tulum.

However, the forecast is that throughout the territory of Quintana Roo there will be heavy rains, which could result in flooded streets. At the moment the classes have not been suspended in the south of Quintana Roo.

It will be from 5:00 p.m. Monday August 7 in the afternoon when the effects of tropical storm “Franklin” will be felt in Chetumal, said the Director of Civil Protection, Adrián Martínez Ortega.

He added that communities such as Punta Herrero, Xcalak, Chinchorro Bank, and the fishermen zones are already evacuated at 6:00 am, because the Ministry of the Interior issued “Yellow Alert” in Othón P. Blanco, Felipe Carrillo Puerto and Bacalar from 5:00 am.  He also added that by Tuesday the storm should be 135 kilometers from Campeche and out to the Gulf of Mexico.

He advised that there are 836 shelters throughout the state that can house 130,000 people in case they need to be evacuated. He specified that in Felipe Carillo Puerto there are 22 urban shelters; In Othón P. Blanco, there are 24 urban and 105 rural.

In Chetumal a press conference was held this morning Monday August 7 in which Governor Carlos Joaquín joined the State Committee for the Coordination of Civil Protection to give all the details about the arrival of the tropical storm Franklin.

According to the statements of the authorities that make up the Committee, they gave all the indications that the population should follow, and the precautions that they must take.

The municipalities of Bacalar, Othón P. Blanco and Felipe Carrillo Puerto also suspended school activities.

The National System of Civil Protection through its social networks announced that in the state of Quintana Roo, the Orange Alert was activated by tropical storm Franklin.

State Governor Carlos Joaquín announced that committees will be set up in all municipalities, and the effects in the northern zone will be less.

Around 6:00 pm, he will make another report regarding Franklin.
