MERIDA — German cellist Leo Schmidt will perform with the Symphony Orchestra of Yucatan one of the masterpieces of musical romanticism, Robert Schumann’s Concerto for Cello Opus 129, in concert at Merida’s José Peón Contreras Theater, October 6 and 8.
In a press conference, the conductor of the local orchestra, Juan Carlos Lomónaco, announced the appearances by the European concert player, who has performed in renowned venues such as Royal Albert Hall, New York Weill Recital Hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, Musikverein and Konzerthaus of Vienna and Fine Arts City of Mexico, among others.
Lomónaco commented that the Concerto for Cello is one of the masterpieces written by the famous composer Schumann.
The fourth program of the second season of concerts for 2017 will also be composed of the Brahms Academic Festival Overture and the Symphony No. 9 “La Grande” by Schubert.
Born in Hamburg in 1989, Schmidt made his debut at age 17 as a soloist. At the invitation of the renowned Claudio Abbado he was a member of the Mozart Orchestra in Bologna, Italy. He shared acclaim with the Gewandhaus-Quartett, Daniel Müller-Schott, Thomas Zehetmair, Pekka Kuusisto, Helmut Lachenmann and George Benjamin.
He has participated in numerous festivals, among them Heidelberger Frühling, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lucerne, Beethoven Fest Bonn, Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, Musikfest Stuttgart, Sonoro Festival in Bucharest, Saronic Festival in Greece and Diaghilev Festival in Perm, Russia.
The president of the Hosting Organization, Margarita Molina Zaldívar, and the general director of the Guaranty Trust of the OSY, Miguel Escobedo Novelo, highlighted the work of the German musician, who has been recognized several times in Europe.
