The meeting of the Ibero-American Tourist Caves Association (Actiba) held in Merida, highlighted Yucatan…

MERIDA — Yucatan has an important natural resource to generate economic activity through its cenotes and caves, which requires greater attention to this area, said Pedro Robledo Ardila, specialist of the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain.

Visiting Merida to sign an agreement with the Ministry of Urban Development and the Environment (Seduma), the expert said that the state would be one of the most important sites in the world, geologically speaking, because it has a vast wealth of cenotes that can be used.

According to the expert, this requires the synergy between authorities, service providers and the citizens themselves who live in the communities where these bodies are located.

He said that several European countries have done this work and have been successful after several years, and so now are powers in attraction of tourists thanks to caves.

Robleda Ardila noted that annually about 60 million people visit caverns or grottos around the world, making it an important niche market.

In that sense, he indicated that Yucatan will be supported to improve its potential in tourist attraction, based on a participation program in which it will be guided in the necessary mechanisms for this.

In fact, during the announcement of Yucatan’s accession to the Association of Ibero-American Tourist Caves, it was proposed that the third world convention of this group, to be held in 2022, may be based in Yucatan, due to the wealth offered by the state in the matter.
