MERIDA — Despite efforts by the authorities to keep the private lands clean, offering bonuses in property taxes and fiscal support, some residents of Mérida insist on neglecting their lots, which are overgrown and function as clandestine garbage dumps or as hiding places for evil-doers.

The Directorate of Government of the City Council reported that from January to date at least two thousand citizen complaints have been registered against this problem, which generates unhealthy conditions and risks for people.

According to this office, this year 151 owners of vacant land have been sanctioned for a total amount of 15,900,580 pesos ($914,000 USD).

According to Milenio Novedades, through the end of 2016 at least 10 thousand vacant lots had been detected in abandoned conditions in Merida; the problem is reportedly, but there is resistance from many owners.

The Directorate of Government indicated that due to the complaints, at least 162 fines have been imposed, ranging from 1,800 to 3 million pesos, the latter to a construction company.

“The fines apply because these lands are in unhealthy conditions, as is the excess of grass, weeds and, in extreme cases, they function as clandestine garbage dumps,” said Jessica Maria Berzunza Magaña, deputy director of the Interior.

A census is already being taken to determine the properties that are at risk of collapse, abandonment or unhealthy outbreaks, said Aref Karam Espósitos, director of Urban Development.

The official added that so far they have identified 400 properties with a certain level of danger, which will be treated to avoid situations of risk.
