Freezer storage will be built at Progreso’s Customs office….
PROGRESO — In order to provide better service to companies that import and export perishable goods, Progreso’s Customs office will have cold rooms for the revision of merchandise, which will start operating in early 2018.
The president of the Association of Customs Agents of Yucatan, Javier Villanueva Pérez-Abreu, stressed that the cold rooms will allow to shelter two containers, 40 tons in total, of goods that require refrigeration for their conservation.

It is expected that before the end of this year, the equipment and adaptation of the infrastructure of the customs area for the movement of perishables will be completed, he noted.
In a statement, Javier Villanueva said that the customs agents were informed of the work by the administrator of the Customs of Progreso, Rodolfo Sixto Tapia, at the session Wednesday October 18, of the Customs Facilitation Committee.

The cold rooms, he stressed, will serve to make it easier for the Customs authorities to carry out their work of inspecting foreign trade goods in the customs facilities, without breaking the cold chain of the containers and avoiding the products damage during the review process.
In the case of Yucatan, he said, the products exported in refrigeration are octopus, fish and other seafood, as well as vegetables, while imported products are meat and cheese, as well as shellfish, which are not produced in this area of the Gulf of Mexico.

Also, Villanueva Perez-Abreu reported that the shipping companies and operators in November could start their operations at the Port of Progreso.
“We are working with the Customs Agents with all service providers, shipping companies, port operatives, carriers and authorities, in the coordination of efforts to avoid that a large volume of cargo represents a problem of saturation for the Port and thereby give impetus and competitiveness to Yucatan,” he said.
