Merida group says there is a lack of political will to solve animal-protection problems with calesa drivers….
MERIDA — Since the beginning of the current municipal administration, the issue of the “Calesas” (Yucatecan traditional horse-drawn carriages) that work in the Main Square of Merida has been discussed.
In the beginning there was a lot of enthusiasm to improve this service, however, the “Caleceros” Union never let the government to intervene in its business, so the authorities left the issue behind, said Ernesto Maurin, representative of the group Citizen’s Animal Movement (MAC).
“They proposed an integrated plan, a tourist shelter near the historic center, where the horses were in the shade resting, with food, and that could even serve to tourists to receive information about the attractions of the city, but the Calesa Drivers refused everything”, said Maurin.
Maurin said there is a lack of political will to solve animal protection problems, which goes beyond the Yucatan capital.
