“First Yucatan Wildlife Fair” to feature native species

MERIDA – Yucatan has a great wealth of species, many of which are currently threatened or endangered, due to the lack of information. For example, there are beliefs associated with species of fauna that generate fear and rejection and that today remain entrenched in society.

In addition, the destruction of their habitats, the contamination of forests and mangroves, forest fires, illegal traffic and overexploitation are the sad reality that the State faces due to the lack of ecological awareness.

In an attempt of solve these serious problems, several groups, institutions and associations in Yucatan have joined the struggle for biological conservation, and to celebrate the National Day of Conservation, which is held every November 27 in Mexico, will be held Sunday November 26 the “1st Yucatan Wildlife Fair” at the facilities of the Technological Science Park of Yucatan.

This initiative promoted by the Wildlife and Environment Unit, A.C. in collaboration with the Science and Technology Park of Yucatan and the Ministry of Innovation, Research and Higher Education aims to publicize the biological and ecological importance of the wildlife that lives in our state to bring the public closer to nature and raise awareness about the care and protection of living beings and their ecosystems.

As for the activities that the public can enjoy, there is a birdwatching tour, also there will be tours in the Ornamental Botanical Garden that has native species of the state, guided tours in the butterfly garden, reforestation campaign, snake handling workshops and protection of the white-tailed deer, amphibian and reptile exhibits, wildlife photographs and talks given by researchers.

The event will include the participation of organizations that stand out in Yucatan for their great work in the conservation of our flora and fauna, such as “Pronatura”, “Network for the Conservation of Amphibians and Reptiles of Yucatan (RCARY)”, “Group for the knowledge of amphibians and reptiles Yuumil Kaan”, “Rescue Zarigüeyal”,”Citizen Animal Movement”,”Community Center for Education, Labor and Environmental Culture, Chimay”; researchers from institutions such as the Scientific Research Center of Yucatan, the Center for Technological Studies of the Sea, the Hideyo Noguchi Regional Research Center, the Autonomous University of Yucatán, and the Technological Institute of Conkal; as well as groups such as “Yucatan Jay”, “Environmental Manage Unit Wild Tsaab Kaan” and “Garra Balam Social Collective”.
