Hacienda Kancabchén maintains great part of its original extension, which is integrated by the main house (totally restored to its original shape), decorated with fine mural paintings, wide halls, high ceilings and large windows. It also features a Chapel, gardens, and even a Zoo!
During the Porfiriato, the social situation in northern Yucatan was not good for Maya peasants and immigrants of Yaqui origin, who worked in the gigantic henequen plantations.
After the Mexican Revolution (1910 – 1921), these workers were given a few parcels. The manipulation of the economic and political power of the mestizo group was an obstacle for the reparto agrario (land distribution) to be applied effectively. Between 1920 and 1930 the land distributed was minimal and almost all of it outside the henequen plantation area.

In the year 1912, Mr. Pascual Gamboa Rivero ordered to build La Hacienda “Kancabchen” (which means well of red earth in Maya). This beautiful colonial type Hacienda is located just 15 minutes away from the city of Merida, and it was dedicated to cattle and henequen. Due to the gradual disappearance of the henequen industry, Mr. Gamboa Rivero gave the property to his daughter, Mrs. Josefina Gamboa de Casares, who owned the place until 1985, year in which the Ponce Garcia Family acquired the property and enabled it as a dairy ranch and a space for recreation and rest.
Currently, the Hacienda maintains a large part of its original extension, which is integrated by the main house, decorated with fine wall paintings, large rooms, high ceilings and large windows and consists of two levels, and it features 8 rooms, library, living room, kitchen, dining room, breakfast room, rest rooms and a bar equipped with board games. The façade has three half-point arches that overlook the corridor and three smaller arches, that face the service area. In the upper level of the building there is a belfry with bell and clock.

This beautiful hacienda also has a chapel big enough for 200 people whose patron is San Antonio de Padua. They also have a Zoo, garden, stables, a lienzo charro and a casino complementing the beautiful green gardens with all types of flowers of great color and lush vegetation.
