The group “Viva la gente” (“Up with People”), made up of 100 young people from 25 different countries, will be visiting our state from April 16 to 22.
In addition to performing in the state capital, they will participate in social work in several communities of the state.
On April 21 they will carry out an activity in the recently inaugurated Centro Cultural del Sur (Southern Mérida) in the morning and in the afternoon in El Centenario.
The activities are promoted by the City of Mérida, in coordination with the Rotary Club.
The organization was born in 1965 in the United States, in order to raise awareness in various communities about the situation in the world, to change people’s attitude and way of thinking, and create a better place for everyone.
According to Enrique Domínguez León, director of tourism and municipal economic promotion, the group had its peak in the 60s and early 70s, at the time of the “hippies“, and was characterized by bringing together young people from around the world with a peaceful approach and musical coexistence.
Resurgence of “Up with people”
“Currently, this movement has resurfaced”, he added, “with an important force. Around 100 young people are currently touring the world, carrying out community work wherever they go: from cleaning up streets and schools, to visiting and fixing up retiring homes.
In that sense, he said that here in Mexico the group usually works with the Rotary Club, so they approached Mérida’s City Council to coordinate activities with the community.
The official informed that on April 17, “Viva la gente” will have a presentation at the José Peón Conteras theater and the rest of the days they will work in different communities of the state.
The 21st will be focused in Mérida with recreation, entertainment, sports and other activities at the Centro Cultural del Sur and at El Centenario.
