As reported by The Yucatan Times, a fire on Periférico sent a cloud of toxic smoke towards the city of Mérida on Sunday April 8. But today, Tuesday April 10, the fire on Periférico is still smoking!
Early on Tuesday, brigades of the National Forestry Commission (Conafor) have been working in several points in the area of the former municipal garbage dump where the fire took place two days ago, the staff of Conafor has poured hundreds of liters of water, which they extracted from a small aguada in front of the CRIT, but they have not been able to extinguish the fire completely.
Since this site used to be the city dump a few years back, there is garbage buried deep in the ground, and this situation has made it difficult to put out the fire.
The smoke is affecting residents from different areas of the city such as Colonias Juan Pablo II, Melitón Salazar and Los Reyes.
The brigades are still working in the central part of the affected area, and hopefully they will be able to totally extinguish the fire in the next 24 hours.
