The Federal Prosecutor for Environmental Protection (Profepa) secured a juvenile male Jaguar (Panthera onca) that was found inside in a private home in the Vista Hermosa neighborhood of the city of Cuernavaca, Morelos, apparently kept without the appropiate health and security conditions, not only for the animal but also for the people around it.
Profepa found that the jaguar was kept in captivity without having a shelter that would avoid the animal to escape.
Inspectors carried out the investigation in order to verify that the owners accredited the legal origin of the feline, as well as the registration and management plan approved by the Semarnat but the owner could not prove that the had the Semarnat registry to own the animal, which is considered an endangered species.
It is noteworthy that although the legal provenance of the specimen was proven, the inspectors observed that it did not have its claws and fangs and that it had been castrated, so that, considering the lack of dignified and respectful treatment, provided in the General Law of Wild Life and its Regulations, the specimen was seized and will be taken to a Zoo.
