Saturday June 23rd in Merida, Yucatan, Merida`s Miguel “Alacran” Berchelt destroys Argentinian Jonathan Barros in World Championship boxing match. With a flurry of forceful attacks characteristic of Berchelt el “Alacran” (the scorpion) , the champ left his opponent Jonathan Barros down for the count in the beginning of the third round. Berchelt came out strong and aggressive in the first round and in the second round put Barros down on the canvas. In the beginning of the third round, after going down yet again, Barros’ corner came out to stop the fight, saving the fighter from any further physical punishment.
Berchelt dominated from the first minute in the first round and the fans were jumping out of their seats shouting “Mexico, Mexico, Mexico!”. There was a massive crowd of around 5 thousand people filling nearly the entire stadium at Poliforum Zamna at the Kulkulcan sports complex. It was a great night for Mexico. Not only had the national football team beat South Korea in the World Cup, but also for the third time Berchelt triumphs as super featherweight World Boxing Council (WBC) champion.

Berchelt whose record is now 35 fights, 34 wins and 30 by way of knockout is a fighter from Cancun, Mexico who has a special place here in Merida because this is where he started his professional boxing career with promoter Mario Abraham at Max Boxing. El Alacran rose up the ranks as a young professional, training about two blocks from the Chem Bech market on 42 and 61 in Centro.

“El Alacrán“became a sensation because of his unbeatable style mixing Cuban technical boxing with the Mexican aggressiveness and drive to fight or die trying. As of October 2017, he is ranked as the world’s second best super featherweight by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, The Ring Magazine and Boxrec. He is also ranked the world’s ninth best active pound for pound boxer by Boxrec. This hometown fighter is the boxer to watch this year and in upcoming championships.
