According to the state head of the National Service of Health, Food Safety and Quality (Senasica), Eduardo Perera Cuevas, for this 2018 it is expected to export between 400 and 500 tons of Pitahaya (commonly known as Dragonfruit) to the United States.
The produce come from Yucatan municipalities such as Tekax, Yobaín, Tixmehuac and Dzidzantún.
In that sense, Perera Cuevas said that this year the first export to Europe was achieved, which was 850 kilograms, and given this panorama, he said that new export destinations are expected, since they are in talks to open new markets in the Asian continent, mainly in countries like China and Vietnam, among others.
Regarding the export to the US, he indicated that the fruit is harvested and packed here in Yucatán, later it is moved to a treatment plant in San Luis Potosí and from there it is sent to the United States once the irradiation treatment has been done, which is to avoid flies and other pests.
Perera Cuevas added that the Pitahaya season began a month ago and will end next October; production cuts are carried out every 28 days, according to the Senasica.
Similarly, it is noteworthy that the states with authorized Pitahaya plantations are Puebla, Guanajuato and Sinaloa.
Although it is being sought to send the fruit to Vietnam, it is known that in that country they have Pitahaya indoor plantations that work with artificial light.
