As the most important beach destinations in all Latinamerica, and one of the most visited worldwide, Cancun and the Riviera Maya are also pet friendly, which means that your beloved pet doesn’t have to stay at home this summer.

In Cancun, for example, the Coral public beach, popularly known as the second lookout (el segundo mirador), provides all the necessary infrastructure so that the visitor and his/her pet can spend a more pleasant time enjoying the sun, sand and sea.

In recent years, pet friendly tourism has revolutionized the world, after millions of tourists wanted to visit places without leaving their pets at home, with family, friends or in pensions.

One of the problems people face when organizing their vacations is the difficulty of bringing along those special beings that are also consider members of their family.

For this reason, the hoteliers and authorities of Quintana Roo have already made a difference for several years now and offer a variety of options of hotels and beaches where pets are accepted.

Spain and Argentina are the countries with the largest number of pet friendly beaches authorized by their local municipal governments.

In Cancun, the Benito Juárez City Council allows pets to enjoy the white sandy beach and turquoise blue waters at Coral Beach, which features baths, garbage cans, palapas, lounge chairs and everything a visitor needs to have a truly enjoyable time with his/her pet.

The rules are clear: pick up your pet’s excrement or vomit, do not litter and try to leave the place as clean as possible by picking up trash.

In the case of quadrupeds (dogs or cats), the recommendation is to bring them on a leash for everyone’s safety. In Cancun there are more than 18 pet-friendly hotels available to book at all times, with prices starting at 500 pesos per night.

Spaces can be reserved, even through the Internet. Maya Cha’an Guesthouse, Kin Sol Soleil Maroma Bay, Nizuc Resort and Spa, are just a few places that offer rooms for more than 2,500 guests who travel with their pets.

The lodging centers have facilities so that dogs or cats can be walked, in addition to offering plans and programs to pamper them. The Westin Resort & Spa Cancun is a resort located in the heart of the hotel zone that accepts pets with a maximum weight of 18 kilos.

Upon arrival you will receive a welcome kit, with a dog bed, a plate for food and a list with important information to facilitate your stay at the destination, you lso get a privacy sign to inform the housekeeping staff that the pet is in the room.

On the Riviera Maya, the Playa del Carmen Thompson, features a panoramic pool and is known as one of the best pet-friendly hotels in the Peninsula. The hotel accepts up to two pets per room and provides food and water dishes, beds and even treats. Best of all, it does not charge additional fees.

There is a large number of pet-friendly hotels throughout Mexico, three of the most faamous are:

  1. Ventanas al Paraíso, at Rosewood Resort, in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur.
  2. Villa Mercedes Petit Hotel, in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco.
  3. Hotel Boca Chica, Acapulco, Guerrero.

However, Quintana Roo is the Mexican state with the largest number of pet friendly tourist attractions and accommodations.

Besides, at the Cancun and the Riviera Maya beaches, pets will not burn their paws in the sand, even if the sun is strong, because the beaches are composed of coral remains, which do not produce a painful sensation on animals. And the weather in Quintana Roo is not as extreme as in other places, it provides a pleasant temperature for pets that will not get sick due to dehydration, heat stroke or sudden changes in temperature.

The beaches to which they have access, such as Playa Coral, are public, and therefore free and have the space necessary for pets (puppies or adults), to enjoy their vacations along with their human companions, and they even have the chance to meet other dogs and start a new friendship.
