On Friday August 10, 2018, the port of Progreso, Yucatán woke up without the surveillance of the Municipal Police.
The 80 agents that conform the force are carrying out a sit-down strike, in protest against their superiors, since they have not been paid the resources of the Security Strengthening Program (Programa de Fortalecimiento a la Seguridad), which they claim Progreso mayor José Cortés Góngora offered to deliver by the end of July.
As a measure to put pressure on the mayor, the municipal police parked the patrol cars in front of the corporation building, near the docks of Yucalpetén, and a commission of 10 police officers went to the Municipal Palace to insist in having a private audience with Cortés Góngora.
Right now, the issue is still unresolved, and the law enforcement, surveillance and security in the port is only in the hands of the Federal Police (Secretaría de Seguridad Pública: SSP).
