The Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) published the agreement by which the Summary of the Program of Management of the Protected Natural Area with Category of Protection Area of Flora and Fauna Yum Balam, located in the Municipality of Lázaro Cárdenas, Quintana Roo, bans plastic to preserve the ecosystem.
This agreement puts an end to the plans of building large hotels and golf courses on this protected area created by Presidential Decree on June 6, 1994. By prohibiting the use of plastic, polymers and other products that attempt against the Flora and Fauna. Even more: only 800 stilt buildings are allowed to be built and solid waste disposal sites will be constructed too.
This reserve holds a mosaic of ecosystems, characterized by a great biodiversity and complexity of flora and fauna, featuring many species in danger of extinction such as the black lizard, the swamp lizard, and birds such as the Yucatecan quail, the kingfisher, the sparrow hawk, caracolero, small diver, and macacito grebe.
– The agreement bans: solid waste, straws, plastic bags or containers made of polypropilene, PET or plastic.
-Do not introduce species that become feral such as dogs and cats.
– It is required to establish sites for the final disposal of solid waste.
– Do not introduce disposable or non-biodegradable containers
– It is not allowed to fish or extract specimens from cenotes.
– Do not fill, cut, remove, transplant or perform any work or activity that affects the integrity of the wetland areas, or the hydrological flow of the ecosystem.
– It is prohibited to use any sound device that alters the behavior of populations of wildlife specimens.
-The use of explosives, as well as pouring or discharging contaminants into the ground, subsoil and any kind of current or water deposit is absolutely prohibited.
