Exports from the Yucatan maquiladora sector generated revenues of more than 400 million US dollars, during the past year, and for 2018 a revenue of 450 million US dollars is expected for this important sector that has 29 partner companies that generate 25,000 jobs.

In addition to this, the certainty provided by the new trade agreement between the United States, Mexico and Canada (Usmca) has confirmed the installation of three maquila companies on Yucatecan soil for the next year.

The president of the Association of Export Maquiladoras of Yucatan (Index), Luis Felipe López Alonso, declared that the North American businessmen were reluctant to settle in the State due to the tension generated by the renegotiations of the Free Trade Agreement with North America ( Tlcan), and a possible rupture of the bilateral agreement between Mexico and the United States.

Once the signatures were ratified, the American corporations expressed their confidence to open their maquiladoras in the State, generating more jobs for the people of Yucatan.

López Alonso stressed that this fall and winter season there are already several product demands, both in the United States and Canada, which will be a good closing this year for the 29 partner companies in the sector, which will also generate more jobs due to the demand for workforce.

“What is important to know is that as long as there is economic stability in the United States, there is demand for the product that is made in Yucatan”, he explained, recalling that in 2008 and 2009, the neighboring northern country experienced an economic crisis, which affected significantly the maquiladora industry in Yucatan, with business closures and staff reductions.
