“A project to clean up the Nichupté and Bojórquez lagoons consisting in the replacement of fresh water from the lagoon with ocean water, at a cost of 20 million pesos, is being analyzed”, said Alfredo Arellano Guillermo, head of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment (SEMA).

In Cuba, a similar project is already in operation, so authorities will travel to the neighboring country to know the details and see if it is possible to carry out at Cancun’s lagoon system, said Alfredo Arellano Guillermo, head of SEMA.

In recent days Marisol Vanegas Pérez, Secretary of Tourism of Quintana Roo, reported that it is a project that counts with the participation of researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). It is a methodology that makes the change of water in six months and has a duration of almost six years.

With this treatment, not only the reproductive capacity of the lagoon would return, but it will also bring an important benefit in ecological terms.

“The idea is to use the driving force of the sea to pump water into the Nichupté lagoon. Of course, economic resources are neede, both from the federation and the state administration , ” Vanegas said.

She confirmed that in Cuba it is already being implemented successfully and based on that experience, it may have a positive effect here in Quintana Roo.

The current conditions of the lagoon, show a state of “anoxia” (almost total lack of oxygen), that is what makes it smell bad, so we need to improve the ecological conditions of this important body of water,” Vanegas concluded.
